'I didn't believe she was a girl': Singaporean Twitch streamer Arthars shares how he found love online

My Gamer Life is an AsiaOne original series where gaming professionals and aspirants in Singapore share the highs, lows, successes, and failures through personal stories on how gaming has defined the course of their lives.

Who says you can't find true love online?

Arthars certainly did, and shared his story of how he met his wife in an interview with AsiaOne for our series on gaming, My Gamer Life.

Making a living off streaming massively multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMORPGs), Arthars has not only found success as one of Singapore's top livestreamers on Twitch, but also as a husband and a father.

When he first met his wife-to-be in Final Fantasy XI, Arthars, now 43, didn't think that she was female.

They had commonalities in that they both played the same game, and were Singaporean, but these titbits of information mattered little to Arthars.

"I mean, I don't know you, we're not going to meet," he recalled thinking to himself.

Over the course of three to five years, however, that distance slowly closed as they played more games together, and eventually led up to them meeting over a simple issue — setting up a Japanese keyboard.

Smiling, Arthars recalled the day they met.

"The first time I met her, I was like, 'Yeah, this is the girl.'"

He shared with AsiaOne: "Sometimes in life you meet this special someone, you just know it."

Fast forward to the present, Arthars is now a father of three children, aged 16, 13 and 11.

His 40-year-old wife, who is very supportive of his livestreaming career, makes surprise appearances every now and then on his livestreams.

Speaking about his career, Arthars said that he's set aside enough savings for his family and settled other finances.

As for himself?

"It's very straightforward," Arthars stated. "I play games, I stream... I just have to make money to get by. Luckily, that's good enough for me."
