The DJI Mini 4 Pro takes small drones up a notch

Before attending the DJI Mini 4 Pro unveiling event, I was a complete novice in the world of drones. My hands had never grasped a drone controller, so my expectations for the Mini 4 Pro were relatively low.

After the event, I am considering enrolling in a certified drone flying course with my remaining SkillsFuture credits. Why? Because the DJI Mini 4 Pro has made quite an impression. 

Dimensions, weight, and rules

The Mini 4 Pro's compactness is a marvel. It is designed for portability and complies with drone regulations in many countries. However, a word of caution: while the DJI Mini 3 Pro battery is compatible with this new model, using the DJI Mini 3 Pro Battery+ could cause the weight to exceed 250g.

For the uninitiated, a gram can make a substantial difference. Unmanned aircraft weighing more than 250 grams are required to register in Singapore. Failure to comply could result in a $10,000 fine, up to six months in prison, or both-a crucial detail for parents considering drones as holiday gifts.

Functionality and features

The flying demonstration highlighted the remarkable video capabilities of the drone. The 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor captures 4K/60fps HDR video and 48MP images with exceptional clarity. As the demonstration was held in the daytime, we were unable to see how the camera performs in low-light conditions. To that end, DJI promises 'improved performance' in such conditions.

The Mini 4 Pro has functions such as Spotlight, Point of Interest, ActiveTrack 360°, MasterShots, QuickShots, Hyperlapse, Panorama, and QuickTransfer. We'll delve deeply into these when we get a review unit. 

Safety is a top priority for DJI. Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems (APAS) and the drone's omnidirectional obstacle sensing promise safer flights by automatically detecting and avoiding obstacles. The live demonstration was at the Tanjong Rhu lookout spot, with little obstruction facing the Kallang River. The demonstrator did a "jam break" on the DJI Mini 4 Pro in the middle of the river without losing altitude, proving its stability.

Editing while moving

The LightCut Editing function, accessible directly from the controller, allows rapid video editing. It provides template-based modification when combined with the Pro software. Under the intense sun, it was difficult to photograph the controller's display, but direct viewing was unaffected.

The DJI Mini 4 Pro is available at DJI ARS Store locations, DJI's official online platforms, and authorised electronics retailers for a starting price of $1,079.  For Malaysia, prices start from RM3,399 and are available through the DJI Experience Stores and the official Shopee and Lazada stores.
